The Biomedical Research Institute is a 170,000 square foot research laboratory building that is adjacent to and connects with LSU's School of Medicine. The ten-story structure houses 56 state-of-the-art laboratories.

The Slack Alost team designed the building to respond to human work concerns as well as to accommodate high technology equipment. Eight of the ten floors house research facilities. These floors contain support labs for monoclonal antibody production, oligonuclotide and peptide synthesis, gene cloning, and DNA sequencing. The second floor has an incubator facility to house joint development projects with the private sector. The ninth floor is dedicated to animal care while the lower level houses administrative offices and the Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Center.
